Mark inside a feature

Spotfire allows for data marking in a map chart by selecting an area or by clicking on a feature, but not by selecting a shape file that has been imported. There are many useful shape files available to overlay on map charts, and those are great for visual presentations, but does not correlate to the data if there isn't a way to create a relationship. All the shape files that I've worked with did not come with data that matched them with the data. 

For instance, I was hoping to find client addresses within US Census urban areas, therefore also knowing who's in a rural area. This is potentially very important information for marketing and strategic purposes.
