Other BI tools that we use have the concept of event based scheduling.
So in addition to a schedule firing at a given time/day and frequency the schedule only fires if a designated trigger file can be found or another schedule that this schedule is dependent on has finished execution.
We struggle today in scheduling our Spotfire jobs and have to take a conservative approach to their start times so we can be fairly confident the source data/tables on which they are based is refreshed for the day.
With our other BI tools we can look for a trigger file that is created as the last step in a particular data refresh and start the reporting refresh then rather than maybe waiting an extra couple of hours due the conservative approach we take in Spotfire Scheduled events.
This would be a huge help in meeting our SLA's and having reports available when our US users come in for the day.
I think Tableau has ability to burst a file from library if a metric in the Tableau file has exceeded a threshold...would really round the product if had this..
I agree with Brad, this is one of those features you can implement yourself doing a little bit of coding. The Web Services API can be even be triggered from a scripting language like PowerShell. I will add a post on the Community site on how to do that.
Hello, it is possible today to initiate a scheduled update from an external system. There are a couple of methods, outlined in the server documentation. Here's a link to the section regarding web services to drive schedule updates:
https://docs.tibco.com/pub/spotfire_server/7.10.0/doc/html/TIB_sfire_server_tsas_admin_help/GUID-13E15745-41ED-4811-A263-20D84838EC1A.html
I could not agree more - part of Tibco's reluctance to tackle this head-on is that they have number of competing applications that they would like you to use. However the integration of these is a nightmare and although we have many of their products the Integration guys don't talk to the BI guys..So the poor end-users are left wondering what's going on. We (and most people) certainly don't need to capture continuous stream of data, just a simple interface to a corporate databases on a limited number of predefined data elements would do (with some kind of a 'built-in' user notification and a trigger for automatic report generation).
Having said that Spotfire would benefit from some kind of 'KPI Assessment Module' where the metrics monitoring rules (events), alerts, tresholds etc would be administered. Often you don't need to run (schedule) reports just to be shown insignificant data changes management need not see. Much of the data generated/stored is never reviewed yet the data centres consume more and more energy to maintain these (what a waste)
