Sorry for the untimely response, I seem to have missed your reply back then. I kind of assume you moved on from this but for anyone else reading this one can use the shape axis to define the shapes, if needed based on a custom expression (or subsets) like I did in this screenshot.
Using the subsets feature it is actually possible to change the shape of the marked data as well:

Hi Heather, there are hollow marker types as well as filled ones,
but there is no way to change the marker type for the marked rowsif that is your primary use case? (See below for how to change the shape of marked rows)
