Why is it useful?
Categorical variables are very important when setting up KPI, that is why "tile by" was added. Consider the case of looking at many metrics by product. Product names would be in "tile by" and each type of metric (operational, financial etc.) would be a set of KPIs. User needs a quick way to distinguish metrics of one product from another. This is where color coding will help.
Right now KPI charts only allow to color by continuous y-values. It is a non-trivial amount of work to set up color by categorical variable (see wiki on workaround I created). I had to manually adjust 3-4 settings for each unique value in a variable.
How?
Allow user to specify color-by categorical variable for a set of KPI's, this can be same as "tile by" to eliminate the case where one tile has multiple values of color-by variable.
Who will it benefit?
I've had to use the work around multiple times while creating dxps. It will be beneficial to spotfire analyst, author, consumer persona.
