We default have automatic filter creation turned off to differentiate the data panel where everything can be filtered by first creating a filter, and the filter panel where only the things we've previously filtered on are present. That makes the filter panel far less cluttered by default. The unintended side effect is that users can no longer "Filter To" and "Filter out" in plots. It would convenient if Spotfire would still allow users to "Filter To" and "Filter out" without requiring that option to be turned on.
