Log everything on the server side (including Nodes, Servers and Action logs) in the system language rather than the end user's language.
Sometimes I'm troubleshooting problems for users in (e.g.) China and it's rather hard given that the log entries are a mixture of languages. We also want to mine our action log data, but again that's made hard by the mixture of languages in the data.
Hi Pete,
Thanks. I see. I agree it should be possible to present the server logs in the same language independent of the client locale settings. I will check with the teams to understand how can this be configured.
Anyhow, just to be sure, you mean messages other than library paths, right ? Because we allow users to name the files and paths in their local language.
Thanks
We see local language messages all over the place - e.g. server logs, node service logs, action log entries. For example, if a Chinese user attempts to open a file in Web Player that they don't have access to, we'll get an entry in the server log in Chinese rather than English. Similarly, entries written to the action log when a user opens a file and executes information links - all the library paths, details on transformations etc. are in local language. I can understand that messages shown to users in Analyst and Web Player need to be in the local language, but anything stored by the server would ideally be in the server language (English in our case). We have tools that we've built to scrape logs for various purposes (e.g. we have a tool that allows report owners to see information on users who don't have access to their reports who have attempted to open them in Web Player) and I've had to include attempts at translation in those tools.
Hi Pete,
Can you provide an example of such messages ? Which type of messages ?
For which services (i.e. Spotfire Server, Web Player, ...) have you observed this ?
Thanks
