If data is displayed not within a single boxplot, but split out (trellis, x, color) into several ones, a single y-axis scale is only adequate if all data is within the same range.
In engineering applications, there are often many orders of magnitude between sets of data. Looking at this kind of data via a simple box plot, only works one parameter at a time right now, since there's just a single y-axis scale on the box plot visualization.
With multiple y-axis scales (per trellis / x / color), several of these parameters could get looked at in parallel, making the data review much more efficient.
One of my customers is asking for this feature too, he is trellis-ing boxplot by pages and since all pages are in the same range, every boxplot on each page looks very small vertically and hard to recognize.
