Spotfire Tibco Problem: With the current version of Spotfire, it is very easy for any user to accidentally click and execute the 'Delete' Data Source or similar option when right clicking even if a warning message related to the delete function is displayed. One sample scenario: If a user or Spotfire administrator is under pressure, and both the 'Delete' and 'Validate' (or other frequently used options) are included in the same right click options (both displaying a message), then the user can potentially mis-interpret a delete message for a validate (or other) message and delete a critical data source affecting many related reports. Without well documented procedures on how to restore a data source, this is risky business. Especially, if the user (for best practice purposes) frequently uses the 'Validate' functionality to ensure that the data sources or information links are working.
Spotfire Tibco Solution Idea Option 1: To reduce the risk of accidental deletions, it may be best to either remove the 'Delete' functionality from the right click menu option that is also shared by the 'Validate' or other frequently used functions.
Spotfire Tibco Solution Idea Option 2: To reduce the risk of accidental deletions, it would be safer to execute a 'Find All References' event after the 'Delete' event is selected that checks and identifies if more than 1 related reference exists. If true, then the 'Delete' should not execute, but instead a message should clearly appear (with a large RED X on the message screen) while displaying all the related references that would be affected by the 'Delete' function with additional instructions to request assistance from a Spotfire administrator if the 'Delete' function is intended and necessary for the displayed related references.
