The idea of the comparison circles (statistically compare data sets associated to individual boxes) is great but since it is limited to the average it kind of falls short in most scenarios. Comparing the underlying distribution is a more generic approach and while things can get tricky quickly, a nonparametric test like the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (K-S test) would be a good starting point.
