There is a 3D scatter plot, which is almost but not quite a 3D bar chart. This functionality would be very useful to show histograms that change over time, which CAN be communicated by a heatmap, just not very effectively. This kind of plot is especially common in audio analysis:
Additionally, surface plots (like the 3D scatter, but with lines connecting adjacent points) with both wireframe and solid coloring could be very interesting.
