I had to revisit the issue, looks like the user was on 6.0, not sure what their logic is.
In attached image, for 7.7, you can see that Sparkline is using "...", whereas SUM() is "(Empty)". I believe in older versions, sum of null data is the --- record.
The "(Empty)" display is an improvement, but the users would actually be looking to substitute this with their own logical displays, such as 0 or N/A to indicate no such values.
