Engineers use many large and small numbers on the same time. This related to the fact tact many formulas are like x=1/y.
Second we use numbers in ranges of 1000 (1k)
Exponential number like 1e-7 are difficult to understand.
Please add the engineering's format to the standard formats, for all users.

Dear all,
I'd like to add a sales/ business perspective to that. This is not only for certain existing customers, this is also important to win new customers.
In sales presentations this feature would help. As of today not having this feature results in breaking the presentation flow while discussion display options. Customers buy based on "the first glance", they buy smooth front-ends.

Agree, there are many kind of users. Now is SF showing 0.0 for very small numbers. I our area is this very unwanted (see sheet 2). Special for currents, they become smaller and smaller in the battle of low power.
The short number format does not allow you to enter numbers. In some cases it is necessary to not have abbreviations such als (k)ilo or (M)ega, but acual values f.e. 10^3 or 10^6. However, I do not see the option to force Spotfire to show only exponents of ten that must be divisible by three.
This way is a work around solution.
Every user needs to add this, without any typo.
Second this is a visualization, you can't use it in calculations.
The Short Number formatting option was designed to allow you abbreviate large numbers so that e.g. 1000 becomes 1k. You can defined your own short number formatting if you don't like the built in formatting. Have you looked at whether or not that addresses your request?
