I don't think that Spotfire does this, and it does not look like it from my eyeballing.
When determining the color mapping for a categorical column, Spotfire should first perform a count of all column values, then apply its "best" categorical color scheme to the top N values. N based on perceptual rules for just noticeable differences, discernability, etc. This would be a big help.
