"Fred is red" for categorical values - color a category by attribute from a table

Business users are one main focus group for Spotfire - they want to easily find their product, region, customer. machine or similar in a visualisation.

From my experience, this is a commonly asked feature, but not many software products have such a feature.

The concept 'Fred is red' means to use one single color throughout all visualisations. This can be achieved in Spotfire by offering the possibility to 'color by attribute' or better said color by a color code coming from a column in a data table.

e.g. all products could have a color code (maybe even based on CI of the customer), the report designer can select in the 'color by' dialog a special option to color by that column. The column would contain a color code based on standards (hex values, RGB or similar)

This is comparable to 'Display Values' where we can use a name from a different column.

Instead of setting the 'Color by column value', we might also use this setting centrally for a dxp - right at the same location as 'Display Values'. Would have to be investigated if this works for all visualisations and how it would overlap with other color by settings
