I'm using icons within a text area to highlight which section is "active" based on a drop down selection. I'm using grey color-boxes to contain the different interactive elements. Unfortunately the icons have white backgrounds rather than transparent so it looks really BAD when placed in grey color-box (picture attached).
I've resorted to using a square rather than a circle to avoid the white background, but even then you can see a small white border element.
