After viewing the release notes for v12, and the available server admin documentation, it does not seem possible to prune the library on the number of versions of a file - only name and date I think. If there is some way to prune by e.g., "delete all versions greater than 5", please tell us how to do this. The mere fact that we can't figure this out is troubling.
We have to disable versioning because we are afraid of library growth, without any way to truly control it the way we need to.
Our library contains 30,000 DXP files in a deep folder hierarchy. Content is long lived and needed to be retained as reference material, and for supporting ongoing research. We don't see the need for pruning by date - that makes no sense for us. We need greater control over files and folders and do not understand how the current tool supports us.
Please add examples to the documentation that show each command line option for library versioning - the description is self-referential and insufficient. It is the least that you can do to adequately explain the use and effect of each option.
thanks,
JP
Implemented in | 12.2 |
Hi,
I'm happy to announce that this feature has been implemented in Spotfire 12.2.
For more details see the What's new in 12.2 page.
For a complete description of all new features, changes in functionality and how customers can upgrade/migrate to this version, see release notes and product documentation.
Thanks!!!
Hi Miguel,
Thanks for the reply. Yes to your question. We would never delete by a date because in our business, good content might survive for many years. When we get requests from users who need to restore a file that they have inadvertently deleted, they typically want the most recent version they were working on.
We (and other PKI customers) have a number of issues with versioning - in short we do not feel that it is fully ready / capable of meeting our needs. There were many gaps mentioned in our meeting w TIBCO yesterday. It certainly does not have sufficient documentation to give us confidence in it's workings. How about starting with examples and scenario descriptions of each CLI option? There should be a chapter in the admin guide on versioning.
As for compression, when we stood up our v12 system for UAT, with versioning and compression enabled, the size of the library grew by ~40% over a few weeks without much activity on the system (mostly testing of existing content and not creating or modifying analysis files).
Hi JP,
Spotfire 12 has transparent library items compression so, even when keeping several versions of an item, the library will not grow up in the same way as before Spotfire 12 (where you may also have some copies but without library compression).
You can prune based on date, like keep "newer than 2 months".
And, in our opinion, the most useful is deleting the versions that have not been named or have not a description. Since that allows you to cherry-pick which versions do you want to keep, independently of the saved date.
See more info here: https://docs.tibco.com/pub/spotfire_server/latest/doc/html/TIB_sfire_server_tsas_admin_help/server/topics/delete-library-versions.html
So, do you mean you want to add another option to prune and keep "latest 5 versions"?
Thanks
