This is one I have struggled with for a while now. The line chart is set up such that the horizontal axis is the "independent variable" axis, and the vertical axis is the "dependent variable(s)" axis. Under most ordinary circumstances this is fine, and by default how we think about a line chart. However, I work with a lot of depth related data and it would make more sense for these data to see the independent variable (depth) along the vertical axis and then the dependent variable(s) along the horizontal. I have found that I can make the line chart look as I like if I only have one dependent variable, but that is just unrealistic for our type of work. Also I have tried using the scatter plots, however the line connections and coloring options there just aren't the same as in a line chart. This would be very similar to the way the bar chart can be switched to vertical or horizontal, and it would be a great improvement to making quality visuals. Thank you for your consideration,
Implemented in | 11.0 |
Vertical line chart is now available as a visualization mod for Spotfire from the TIBCO Community Exchange: https://community.tibco.com/modules/vertical-line-chart-mod-tibco-spotfirer
To use the vertical line chart mod, Spotfire 11.0 or later is required.
Is there any hope of this being implemented at some point? I have created a multiwell display for streaming drilling data from Streambase but the other engineers I work with really want it to be oriented vertically instead of horizontally so that it looks more like the pason displays they are accustomed to.
After attending the recent Tibco energy forum in Houston, I again want to reiterate the need for this type of chart. I heard that the visualizations for the real time drilling data tool were built in Java, which neatly got around any difficulty, but leaving those of us without java building capabilities out. With as many applications as swapping the axis' have in the energy sector, it would be a shame not to keep pushing for this enhancement.
We would like to have the combination chart where the x and y axes are switched -- horizontal combination chart.
I have used the Scatterplot/line connection option for several years now in E&P for Total Vertical depth visualisations but there are still a number of limitations with that approach which would be addressed if we could flip a line chart to vertical. e.g. Multiple scales dependant variables on the same axis.
If there is an R-plot or possibly a D3 Javascript visualisation that does this please point me to it.
Good idea. This is a standard visualization for O&G well log depth charts. Current alternatives include a (trellised) scatter plot as mentioned by Tobias, or an R plot, or even Tibco OpenSpirit.
Original idea included Scatter Plot, Combination as well. Scatter plot is useful for being able to visualize point data in relation to a line (well log data, core data). Combination is useful for being able to show a histogram with cumulative distribution curve next to X and Y axis. Currently only possible for X because of limitation.
I merged this two ideas and changed the title. I hope I captured your idea correctly.
This is not at the top of our visualization improvement list yet, but we are keeping an eye on it. In the meantime you may want to try to use a scatterplot with line connection as a workaround to see if that get´s you closer to the visualization you want to create.
Thanks JJ. The two are very similar. We are supposed to be moving to version 7.6 very soon so I will check to see if there is anything to the comments from the other posting.
Good suggestion, sounds like this idea from a few months ago
