Histograms are very good to visualize medium to large size of dataset. However, smaller samples get usually poorly represented. If the data points are spread appart, the histogram bars do not build a shape. If the data is very clustered, the histogram may lead the reader astray in the amount of data that supports its shape. An ideal remedy for small sample sizes are dotplots. They have the huge advantage to convey the supporting sample size immediately. They look appropiate, when histograms do not. They also transmit categories with colors very well. Dotplots are recommended by the classic book on design of experiment by Box, Hunter, Hunter. In the attachment can be found a plot of two samples, 10 data points each, generated by the ggplot package in R.
