Before Spotfire 10, page navigation tabs were located above the visualization area - this is the preferred location by all of our end users. Spotfire 10 moved them to the bottom of the screen and there doesn't seem to be an option to move them back to the top. This is rather annoying when you open an analysis and now have to go to the lower section to navigate to a different page. It would be nice if we could put them back at the top without having to create a text area at the top with buttons for controlling the page navigation for every file in our library. I'm not sure why it was changed, but we need the option to put it back the way it was if possible.
Implemented in | 12.0 |
Spotfire 12.0 LTS provides more control over the customization of an analytic app UI by enabling to display the navigation bar and status on top of the visualization canvas.

Dear all,
we have understood that this design change caused problems. While we misjudged the impact of this change, I would like to assure you all that we do think a lot about the user experience here at TIBCO. Spotfire X was all about providing a new, easier to use experience. If you are interested, you can read about the design rationale here.
Of course the UI design is continuously evolving as we add new features and learn from user feedback. I understand that many of you would like to hear that we are working on solving this particular issue, but as we have stated in other conversations we cannot make forward looking statements around product development. Thank you for your understanding and keep the feedback coming in this and other idea threads.

It's things like this -- complete lack of consideration or concern of what changes do to customers, that are pushing customers to other products and companies. No wonder that Spotfire is declining significantly.
The page tabs of the dashboard should be at the top of the screen rather than at the bottom, It's such an unfriendly UI look. Our production deployment has been delayed because of this. Please make sure you add this enhancement urgently,
It is pretty disappointing that this was not added in 10.10 since the impact has been communicated so many times for so long and I thought/hoped the new interface would add flexibility and make change easier. We have a deployment still on 7.11 LST and still NOT moving because of this issue.
The hint to update the css makes for a pretty ugly top tab and requires a textual area on every page it seems.
@Niklas, @TIBCO, any update beyond Under consideration?
I hope it will be via a hot fix and not need to wait another 18 months for the next LTS.
The point here should not be what is the right or wrong way to build great UX apps. Consider the impact beyond the pure technical implementation.
The point is that we have arbitrarily forced people to change their existing systems and corporate standards to upgrade to Spotfire X.
Take a bank who has invested millions of dollars in training and enablement on the national branch rollout of a mortgage processing UI. Consider a shipping copany with globack rollout of a processing node tracking page. Having that system upgrade to X would necessitate an entire refactoring of the training program, retraining the entire workforce, and possibly going against the UI standards adopted by all the other firms UX applications.
The costs of this far outweigh simply haing someone redeploy an upgrade.
Don't try to be excel. Tabs are a primary interactivity feature of Spotfire and should be on the top of the page (at least as an option). Most other software places this functionality at the top. My users are constantly confused by the change, thinking that the tabs have disappeared. Interference with the windows taskbar previews that appear is also an issue.
With the tabs at the bottom of the screen now, there is a "battle" created between the windows task bar and the spotfire tab selector. Often during interactive use and especially during presentations using spotfire, my mouse will slightly overshoot the tab selector and I have to calm myself as I wait for the windows task bar pop-ups to go back down before I can select the spotfire tabs again.
I believe with a number of companies using Spotfire in Mashups, that this should never even have been an issue. Please consider how the customer is using the product before making changes. Not to mention User experience, and the number of training documents or references user may have to the specific tab layout.
Has anyone tried this yet?
It shows a rudimentary way to move it yourself. I noticed that Spotfire likes to re-apply css in the webplayer, so you'd need something that keeps these settings and you would need to do this on every tab in the workbook.
HTML Sanitation must be off for this to work.
is there any timeline for this one to be implemented
I would like to see the page tab back on the top of the page or on the left side please.
Same Is the issue I am facing with the Customer in Australia. Customer's all the Manuals are build with keeping navigation at the top and it is taking hard time for them to adjust to this new approach as they are used to same.
Customer has 100s of existing files that are optimized for navigation from the top of the window. Even many reports with instructions to navigate using the tabs at the top of the window.
TK, many thanks for contributing your Idea. I did split the part about closing the web client and returning to the library browser into its own idea so we can capture votes for the two ideas independently. The new Idea has the id TS-I-6828 and I set you as the creator. Let me know if I got anything wrong or have any comments.
