Complete control over table styling

Options for completely controlling the style of tables, cross tables, graphical tables and summary stables. Specifically the ability to set:

  • Cell Padding, Border Radius, Cell alignmen,  Border Color and Box shadow for the entire table
  • Background color(s) and gradient for the header row
  • Background color(s), gradient or alternate row colors for the data rows
  • Font Family, Font Size, Font Style, and Font Color for the header row
  • Font Family, Font Size, Font Style, and Font Color for the data rows

See http://www.csstablegenerator.com/ for an example of different table styles.

With the improvements in 10.10 LTS we have now closed this idea, while not everything that can possibly be included in "complete control over table styling" is possible. See the admin response for links to some ideas that remain open and can be voted for. And of course feel free to add new ideas as usual.

+1 for making it have basically the exact some formatting capabilities as Excel. My biggest road block to getting people on board with switching from manually done Excel reports to automatic Spotfire reports is I can't make their reports look exactly the same as their old Excel reports.

    Thanks Niklas,

Yes it does sound like this needs to be split if you need to know relative priorities. For us we use cross tables a lot and the lack of control is frustrating. Our biggest issues in this area are currently are:

-> not being able to define border widths,

->  we can't set the Header Text Orientation using scripts, so we lose the original setting if we are applying other options eg via controls in Consumer

    ->  Colouring of headers

It is difficult to define the "most important" since all these things seriously impact the clarity of visualization and amount of information which can be seen and hence usability of the Spotfire product.

Louise, we unfortunately cannot share future product plans.

As Harold pointed out in the previous comment this Idea is composed by many smaller Ideas. It would be interesting to hear if header background color is generally considered the most important?

    Hi,

Do you have any updates on when setting background colours for column and row headers will be implemented?

This is a significant gap in a "visualization" tool.

    Many Thanks

Even though I voted for this idea, I think it needs an update (and maybe splitting them up so that it meets changelogs).  Some of the items listed here now are somewhat available now in 10.X+, so every time this idea pops up, I always end up wondering if it's a new request that wasn't covered, or whether it's just clarification which one went into the recent release.

Actually, I consider TS-I-5507 most important, also for cross tables. Next would be better visible cell borders, which would include adjusting color and width. Furthermore, I'd like to see conditional coloring of the axis labels in cross tables.

Any feature that enables me to style my table is important, I would say coloring now is important.

Tobias, I would say anything related to dynamic or percentage based sizing (width) is probably the top of the list.  More coloring options would be really nice, but I struggle constantly with being able to design something on a 1080 monitor and it simply will not fit on a laptop screen of smaller res without being able to support dynamic sizing - both width and font.  Granted I'm still on 7.8 so maybe some of this has already been addressed.

We have implemented more support for styling tables since this idea was first reported, but I agree with you that we still have work to do when it comes to giving the user "complete" control over table styling. There are some comments here from other users about specific styling options they would like to see. What is most important to you?

@Tobias Lehtipalo How to long it takes you to implement an idea user voted and wanted 3 years ago?

Pretty visualisations are great but sometimes the simplest way of showing data is the best ! Especially when you have drilled down to your target data set.

Each cell should be customizable based on rules or code. Headings should be customizable.
Rows should be able to span multiple lines ( card like expansion would be cool)  should be able to include images..... please, now that we have made great improvements in X, can we address the irritations ?

Please include this for all aspects of all table visualizations, including Graphical Tables and Summary Tables. Currently the formatting of the first column in Graphical tables has given me some trouble especially.

Please also add the auto-adjustment or wrap text for cross table so the width of the column automatically adjust to the size of its contents.

It would be great to have the functionality to group certain columns under one header (additional header row). This would save space e.g. if all share the same prefix.

A user should have the ability to make a Spotfire Table or Cross Table look like Excel. That's the bar for business users.

It'd be nice to have (and I let my imagination run free a bit here in the 3rd point):

    • An auto-fit to content option
    • Automatically size headers to occupy multiple rows and wrapping header text where there are too long to fit a column width
    • "Intelligent" option to auto-fit content of important columns for wide tables that can't be displayed on a single screen
      • E.g. for a table of customer records, the table is smart enough to know that total value of past purchases is important (e.g. based on the fact that it is a measure) and street address is not. As a result, it automatically auto-fits the total value of past result column and not the street address column

These adjustments can be manually made today and it requires some diligence from the user creating the dxps. I've seen numerous dxps with the column widths left unadjusted, and as a result hiding full lines of information. This requires the audience of the dxp to adjust the columns themselves (if they have the chance to!) to view the information conveyed.

Having an auto-fit feature will take us a step further to making it easier to create consumer-friendly dashboards.

Cell alignment will be helpful if we have in the Graphical Table as well. In the Cross Table Grand total rows/columns should allow the type of aggregation manually instead of just grand total of row/column formula.
