There is an issue with the color by: option within visualizations in Spotfire. Currently I have created a 10 step color scheme starting with Purple ending with Yellow (see: Color Scheme pic). When I establish this color scheme in Properties > Colors it looks like it is working by repeating that color scheme each time it runs through the 10 colors. However, dealing with a large data set there is an issue where it won't hold this color scheme.
When you look at the image (Color Example Working), this is what it looks like when I first establish the color scheme. It looks to be repeating the same 10 step color option which is the desired effect. The issue comes when you change any criteria within the visualization. In my example, I changed what data I wanted to see in my visualization. When I do that it did not hold the color scheme (see: Color Scheme Not Resetting). As you can see it just randomly assigns colors with no rhyme or reason, duplicating colors in most instances. This can cause concerns when dealing with a visualization, not being able to easily detected different data points.
My recommendation is, if you establish a color scheme on your visualization, each time you filter criteria that color scheme should reset to the desired color scheme. This will help avoid confusion of color duplications and make it easier to read the graph. With large amounts of data there could be a good amount of filtering and the color scheme you spent time working on should be able to adapt to it.
Hello Robert,
We could not reproduce that issue. It might be something that was solved in a previous Spotfire release. Today, if a color scheme is assigned to a visualization, it is kept by the visualization if changing data table or changing other properties, or filtering the data.
