Version 10 no longer allows you to select a default visualization type, instead it pops up a menu, then you have to choose the visualization type every time. Plus if you're opening an information link directly from the information designer, the pop ups occur behind the information designer window so you have to minimize the window in order to click on the menu that takes you to another menu. Being able to select a default visualization will save developers a lot of time.
Implemented in | 11.2 |
Starting with Spotfire 11.2, you can now select a default visualization type that will be displayed when adding data to Spotfire. This feature was available in Spotfire 7.14 and earlier versions, and is now reintroduced.
You can learn more about this in the What's New in Spotfire 11.2 page here: https://community.tibco.com/wiki/whats-new-tibco-spotfirer-112#toc-12
The Default Visualization feature in 11.2 does not seem to work when opening Information Links from the Information Designer. It only works for when you add data from the library or a file. In previous Spotfire versions, the default visualization also applied to Information Designer. Is the new implementation by design or a bug?
Hi Nicklas,
Thanks for reply, and I think your assessment should be the default behavior. This is what Spotfire has done for many many years, and there is nothing wrong with it. It works well. In fact, as I wrote, it's preferred (IMHO) because the user immediately gets to visually QA the data in the best possible way. This is really impossible to do with the "preview" functionality due to the reduced size of the preview. The workaround you mention, while helpful, is insufficient. Plus, it's not available in the LTS version, which is what your larger customers probably gravitate to.
Spotfire's data table viz is so much better than it's competitors - why not flaunt it? And provide the means for user/admin to alter the behavior.
IMHO every new important feature should be modifiable via an option or config setting - this should be baked into the product as a design pattern.
thx,
JP
Thank you all for providing your feedback. I take it that you would like to see that when you add a new data table, if the user has selected a default visualization type (often table I assume), a new page should be automatically created and a visualization of the selected default type should be added to that page.
As of now, for users of Spotfire 10.4 or later, there is the possibility to quickly create a table by pressing CTRL+1 on the keyboard. While not a solution to your feedback it is a quick way of creating a table
Is this all versions of 10.x. We are planning upgrade from 7.14 to 10.6. send there is a lot of regressive and annoying behaviours with the new UI.
I totally agree with the poster and commenters. TIBCO has now added more steps to get to the visualization. How is this an improvement? It is not. I, and most of the users that I support, like and want to have a default viz, particularly the table, to view what the data actually looks like when it is imported, and before deciding what to do next.
Why not bring this setting back, and then offering an option to do nothing, which is the current behavior. In this way we can get our work done faster and TIBCO can show off their new wonderful workflow.
Very disappointed in the new L&F - it is neither efficient nor intuitive.
thanks,
JP
This is ridiculous that this is not a feature of Spotfire 10, it's such an annoying time wasting change.
Default should always be the data table!
