The launch screen in Spotfire X needs to be redesigned. The new screen resulted in the loss of very basic functionality, including the ability to see the entire file name. You also can't sort, and users can no longer see the contents of information links as in the old version. These features were very useful and need to be added back into the application.
Implemented in | 10.8 |
Spotfire 10.8 now provides the ability to view the details of library items, such as columns used in an information link. Please read more at: https://community.tibco.com/wiki/whats-new-tibco-spotfirer-108
Dear all,
In order to make sure we have a common picture of what is possible and what is missing compared with 7.11 LTS I try to summarize it here.
As of Spotfire 10.8 you can do these operations in the browse library:
Sort on the Name, modified and Type (10.3 LTS) using the little sort icon near the top right of the flyout.
Resize the flyout in various ways to see long paths etc
View details of the selected item such as columns of info links, various paths in the details view
Copy selected items from the details view such as the URL or GUID using CTRL-C
Copy all details using the copy to clipboard button in the bottom.
Here is the 7.11 Open from library dialog as a reference :
So, what I can see is missing compared with 7.11 is:
Sort on Modified By, Size and Description. I created a dedicated Idea to represent this: https://ideas.tibco.com/ideas/TS-I-7648
7.11 on the other hand does not show the Path, URLs or GUID in this dialog. These are present in the Library Administration tool, which is still available in Spotfire 10.
Please let me know if you agree with this assessment of the current situation, and vote for the idea I created if you think it is important.
Of course, we would like to provide a better user experience and exceed capabilities in 7.11 LTS, so create any additional ideas you see suitable.
Looking forward to hear your views.
Could not agree more with most of these comments. Also, let us brand/edit the right half of the screen. It would be great if our organization could put contact info in here, posts about Spotfire classes we offer, etc. Really missing the mark with the giant pic of 2 portly people
After using 10.8 a little bit, TIBCO has missed the mark with this solution - yes, you have to drill down into an item to get these details. That's a good idea, but we need to have more of a 7.11 presentation, where you can sort on things like created or modified date, or creator/ last modifier. The presentation still does not lend itself to rapid or even easy assimilation. Hiding this information is counterproductive.
Also, you cannot get links to the file as you would in v7.11 - they are just plain text which you'd need to copy paste. And there is no way to copy out the link with GUID, like you were able to do in 7.11.
We need a better implementation here, please. How about TIBCO get some of us on a call to discuss?
thanks,
JP
I went into the What's New page to look at the changes made in 10.8. I'm very happy to see that the information that we lost (create date, modified date) is now available again. And, you can resize the screen. But, from what I can see in the GIF demo, you can't sort on that information, which still makes it hard to work with and not as good at pre 10. The sorting was really important. If you are looking at a folder with 30+ files in it, looking at them one by one is impossible and ineffecient.
Hello,
I am not sure that the changes made meet the need. Looking at the "whats new" page, it looks like the additional file info (created, modified, etc.), are only viewable by selecting the item in the list. That does nothing for me and my users. I need to see this critical file info up front, in context with all the other files in the list.
Can TIBCO lease publish more details about the changes made under this Idea? I had many of my ideas merged into this one, and it does not seem to account for all of them.
thanks,
JP
I still feel like there is not enough "previous files" space. I use a lot of files and I really like to be able to get back to them in the launch screen instead of digging through file open. Also, I'm good with them just being simply listed, I don't always need a preview of them to know which one to open.
I agree, it was quite useful to have handy the information of who last modified the dashboard and the size of the file. Now not even hovering I can get this info. I need to get to Lib Admin window to see these details.
Please bring back those features.
This lack of functionality is crippling--this is not being dramatic it has literally changed the way I work. Glad to hear 10.3 has some changes, but sounds like it's still not enough. As another user posted, I need to see the details of the infolink (notes, created by, updated date, columns included, etc) in addition to the basic details of the file I am trying to select (modified, created, full name!!!). Looking forward to getting this corrected.
Spotfire 10.3 implements the ability to resize to see longer column names, hover to see description and sorting the contents when browsing the library. What is still left is the information links contents.
Direct quote from a user upon trying to find an information link in the new screen:
The lack of sorting makes it far less convenient to find the files you worked most recently on.
I can't see what columns and prompts are in an information link. I now have to load data to see what it is. This is a step backwards.
