Hi All:
The user interface in Spotfire 10 seems to be optimized for touchscreen users at the expense of mouse users In order to enable touch, many of the icons, menu text lines, and text in panels are spaced much further apart than .in older versions of Spotfire This is a problem because this extra spacing costs screen real estate that is now missing for visualizing data and charts.
My recommendation would be to allow Spotfire to have different modes in which it can operate: One for mouse users with smaller fonts and less space between lines and one for touch users with larger fonts and more space between lines and icons.
Basically: If you want to use touch, you can see less data on your screen but you can click on something with "low resolution" fingers. If you are using a "high resolution" mouse, you get more screen real estate for your charts.
Thank you for your kind consideration
Klaus
Feedback from Klaus about this idea:
"The wide spacing of text in drop downs, menus, tags, and bookmarks does not always allow showing all the relevant information unless users constantly scroll up and down.
The option to space text closer (less line-to-line distance between items) would increase efficiency for traditional mouse users."
Hi Klaus!
Many thanks for contributing with your ideas.
As you say Spotfire 10 does have a more spacy and clean visual design, for example items in the data flyout, visualizations flyout and the menu are clearly separated. However, we have attempted not to affect the available space for visualizations. So the filter panel for example has the same tight visual design as in earlier versions.
The data flyout (former data panel) in spotfire 10 has a more spacy visual design but it does not consume visualization area since it sldies out on top of the visuals.
So, I get your general advice on separating the user experience on touch and mouse/keyboard, but is there any specific example where you have found Spotfire 10 gives less space for visualizations?
